Suggested Teaching Models:
|
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
- Establish a consistent entrance activity
- Activity set-up: Set up activities prior to students entering the classroom when able. Use time when students are practicing skills to do additional set up.
- Activity transitions: Choose games that flow into each other easily
- Instruction delivery: Pre-determine how you are going to deliver instruction, where you are going to stand, walk around (perimeter of classroom)
- Use a consistent start/stop signal: Whistles, Say FREEZE, Clapping
- Pre-establish how to group students for activities: Counting off, Students get into groups then divide from there (i.e. If you need groups of 4, divide # of students by 4, 24 / 4 = 6, students get into groups of 6 then one at a time, they stand and form your group of 4), Predetermined groups, group lists
- Know when to assess: One-on-one scheduled time, during skill practice as you go down the line, at stations.
BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT
- Use positive reinforcement: Lilly, I really like how you shared your basketball with Isabel!
- Use the IF / THEN principal: If you put all the equipment away in its proper place, then we will play a tag game.
- Positive practice: Practicing appropriate desired behaviors.
- Proximity Control: Standing near the students who are off task to encourage on-task behaviors.
- Be consistent with rules and consequences
- Follow-through with what you say you will do
- Reward good behavior: Use a token economy, numbered behavior system, small prizes, certificates
- Use the ripple effect: Telling Kendrick that you really appreciate the way he's controlling his body while sitting in personal space encourages others around him to do the same.
